The Lord of Misrule Ramps it Up One More Notch

Lord Misrule

As multiple reports surface of efforts to cook the books on the covid stats, at the state and level, Trump once again tried to own the libs by claiming he is taking hydroxychloroquine as a prophylactic. Charlie Sykes mourns the death of satire:

Keep in mind that the supposed—but unproven—benefits of HCQ are as a therapeutic for people who have COVID-19, not as a prophylactic to prevent you from contracting the virus.

Also keep in mind that it’s an open question as to whether or not the president of the United States is

    • Taking an unproven and unnecessary medication which the medical establishment has warned is dangerous in the context of COVID-19, or
    • Lying about taking this medication.

Satire despairs.

This clusterfork came two days after one of the president’s grown-ass sons, Eric, claimed that the novel coronavirus which has killed, officially, more than 90,000 Americans will “magically vanish” after the November 3 election, freeing the country to reopen.

Why will it vanish after November 3? As Eric explained Fox’s Jeanine Pirro there is a “cognizant strategy” by Trump’s enemies to use COVID-19 to thwart his father’s ability to hold his trademark rallies. After daddy’s glorious reelection, the Deep State Fake News Whatever will no longer need this phantom threat, so it will simply vanish.

Aardvark’s Animadversions

If Orange Man wants to take a drug that is likely to cause his heart to fail, and if he takes it and his heart fails, then so be it.

And if Orange Man think’s it’s all a hoax, and if he wants to revive the Nuremburg rallies, there’s no need whatsoever to be deterred by the media. No need at all. Let Trump revive the Nuremburg rallies, and let his followers come in droves, coughing, spitting, and high-fiveing, and let the consequences be what the consequences will be.

Unmoored, Drifting Toward Dictatorship

I don’t know how this situation ends. I do know that I’m glad I am an old man, not a young man. I know that rending your garments, and then burying your head in the sand, will not help. And, most important, I grasp that the first step toward a proper remedy for this hot mess—if there is a remedy to be had—if a proper understanding of the cause of the hot mess.

The Underlying Cause

The cause lies not in the personality disorders of Donald Trump, nor in Bill Barr and whatever it is that has made him take leave of his senses.

The cause of our present drift toward autocracy lies in the fact that a good portion of our population has come to believe two things:

  • that they are sliding off a demographic slope that will soon keep them from winning any more elections, and that
  • losing to the other side will be disastrous to all they hold dear.

Based on those two premises, they have reasoned that if democracy will produce disastrous results, then they must embrace autocracy instead.

Who Has Embraced this Autocratic Project?

We know the answer: generally speaking, the rural rather than the urban and suburban population; people who live in poor areas rather than people in economically productive areas; people with less education rather than people with more education; white people rather than non-white people; men rather than women.

Will the Urban and Suburban Population, the Educated Population, the Non-White Population, and the Women Accept Dictatorship without a Fight?

No, they will not.

Will the FBI, the CIA, the Justice Department, and the Foreign Service Accept Dictatorship without a Fight?

No, they will not.

And How Will the Plutocracy and the Corporate Elite React?

Well, to begin with, we may assume that most of them will view this from the standpoint of monetary self-interest, not morality. And, sitting in the board room of a Fortune 500 company, it may seem tempting to embrace a corrupt, autocratic, “business friendly” regime. Some will succumb to the temptation.

But from a larger perspective, there is a grievous cost to be paid for joining in an attempt by the least educated and the least productive people in the nation, to step on the throats of the best educated and the most productive part of the population.

Such a thing is not really good for business.

2018 and 2020

These kinds of choices were beginning to become clear in the 2018 elections.

As 2020 rolls around, the Hogwarts sorting hat will go into overtime.

There will be more and more Nuremberg rallies. Probably one or two every day.

There will be, as Ed Sullivan used to say, a Really Big Shew going on in the Senate.

There will be a time of reckoning.

This is my first post of the day. So, it’s gratifying that I already have readers from Georgia (the country), Kenya, India, Mauritius, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Tanzania, and the United States. Please pray for us.

Louisiana to Donald Trump: Take Your Nuremberg Rallies and Shove ‘Em

Yesterday, Gov. Edwards, the Democratic governor of Louisiana, won reelection with 51 percent of the vote.

Louisiana has a non-partisan “jungle” primary election. If no one achieves a majority in the primary, then the top two candidates face off in the final election, held yesterday.

In the primary, the Democrat won 47 percent of the vote. President Lizard Brain inferred that, between the primary and the final election, he could go to Louisiana and hold some Nuremberg rallies and then claim credit when the Republican candidate won the two-person final election.

To put President Lizard Brain’s reasoning in context, I note that he won Louisiana in 2016 by a 20 percent margin.

And, as expected, the recent Nuremberg rallies did indeed gin up turnout among Trump cultists “in the state’s southern marshes, as well as in the rural northern and western part of the state.”

But rallies also ginned up even more anti-Trump turnout among African-Americans and suburban voters.

I see that, even though I didn’t post anything yesterday, I still have readers from Russia. So, Vladimir, how’s that Trumpy thing workin’ out for ya?
