She is Debbie Lesko, and she has just been elected to Congress as a Republican in a special election in Arizona’s eighth congressional district. (The previous incumbent, likewise a Republican, had run unopposed for a decade. That was before word leaked out that he had started asking staff members to bear his child.)
Ms. Lesko won yesterday by five points. In 2016 Trump won her district by 21 points. Republican support has declined in the eighth district by 16 points.
That means that if you are a Republican candidate and your district is normally R + 17 you will probably win your next election. Just barely. Unless things get screwed up worse. Did I hear anyone say “trade war”?
